The Skills Programme: Team Motivator (SP-250802) is a QCTO-aligned programme that prepares learners to build team cohesion, motivate people in ways that actually hold, and develop individual team members through coaching and mentoring. The programme responds directly to the cost organisations carry when capable teams underperform — when trust hasn't been built, when communication breaks down without anyone naming it, and when development is promised but never structured. It equips learners to diagnose what a team needs and act on it rather than relying on encouragement alone.
The programme integrates theoretical knowledge with applied team activity across the full development cycle — from team dynamics, stages and roles, through communication, conflict approaches and emotional intelligence, to coaching, mentoring and personalised development planning. On completion, learners are able to explain the stages a team moves through and the roles people play within it, apply motivational theory to a real team, identify where communication breaks down and choose the right channel, distinguish coaching from mentoring and select the right one, build a development plan a person will actually follow, identify the barriers to team growth including the ones that involve themselves, and give feedback that changes behaviour rather than damaging it.
The purpose of this skills programme is to enable a learner to build team cohesion, apply motivational strategies, communicate effectively within a team, and use coaching and mentoring techniques to develop individual team members and the team as a whole. Learners are also taught the limits: motivational technique may not be used to pressure someone into disclosing personal information, to build a case against an employee, to single a person out without their agreement, or to treat a performance problem with a disciplinary dimension as though it were only a motivation problem.
This programme is designed for people who lead or influence a team, as well as those preparing to take on that responsibility. It is well suited to:
Learners must be competent at NQF Level 3, or demonstrate equivalent competence, with the ability to read, write and communicate in English at that level. Because the practical component is conducted with a real team in a real setting rather than in a role-play, learners must have — or be able to obtain — access to a team, whether formal or informal. Learners without a team should notify the programme coordinator at registration so that arrangements can be made. Recognition of Prior Learning for access is available in accordance with the QCTO RPL Policy and must be lodged before the programme commences.
