For learners
What is the difference between a skills programme and an occupational qualification?
A skills programme is a shorter, credit-bearing programme registered with the QCTO that builds a specific set of workplace skills. An occupational qualification (occupational certificate) is a full qualification for an occupation, made up of knowledge, practical and workplace modules and finished with an external integrated summative assessment (EISA).
Do I need matric to enrol?
It depends on the programme. Each programme page lists its entry requirements — some start at NQF Level 1 or 2, others need NQF Level 4 or 5. If you do not meet the formal requirements, you may be able to enter through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
Can I study online?
Yes. Most programmes can be completed through a mix of self-paced online modules on the Tonex Learning Portal and live online classes with a facilitator. Practical and workplace components are completed in a real or simulated workplace, as the curriculum requires.
How does the online final assessment (FISA) work?
You join a live video call with an invigilator, who checks your identity and your room and then admits you — only then can you start. You write the assessment on a computer either in Safe Exam Browser (a free lockdown app; the portal shows you the right download) or in secure mode in your normal browser, depending on the assessment. You need a stable internet connection, a camera and microphone, and a quiet room where you can sit alone for the full session.
I studied with another provider. Can I do only the assessment with Tonex?
Yes. If you completed the knowledge, practical and workplace modules with another accredited provider, you can book the practical assessment and FISA with us. Bring your Statement of Results from that provider when you register.
What happens if I am found not yet competent?
Your assessor explains what is missing and you can resubmit evidence or be re-assessed. You may also appeal an assessment decision in writing within ten working days; appealing costs nothing and carries no prejudice.
When will I receive my certificate?
Results are released after internal moderation. Final results are submitted to the QCTO, and certification follows the QCTO’s approval, so timelines depend partly on the QCTO.
How is my personal information protected?
We process your information under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) to register, train, assess and certify you and to report to the QCTO and SETAs as required. Identity documents are encrypted on our server and only staff allocated to your programme can open them.
For employers
Can you train our staff at our premises?
Yes. We deliver on-site anywhere in South Africa, at our Germiston facility, or live online. Programmes can be customised to your policies, systems and operating context.
Do your programmes count towards B-BBEE skills development?
Accredited learnerships and skills programmes can contribute to the Skills Development element of the B-BBEE scorecard. We provide the learner records, attendance and results evidence your verification agency will ask for.
Can you manage a learnership for us from start to finish?
Yes — learner recruitment and selection, registration, delivery, workplace component coordination, assessment, moderation, QCTO submissions and progress reporting.
How do we see our employees’ progress?
Through regular reports and, where agreed, access to cohort progress, attendance and assessment status on the Tonex Learning Portal.
Using the portal
I forgot my password. What do I do?
On the portal sign-in page, choose “Forgot your password?” and follow the link sent to your email address.
Which devices can I use?
The portal works on any modern phone, tablet or computer. Final assessments need a laptop or desktop computer; those that use Safe Exam Browser need a Windows PC or a Mac (or an iPad with the SEB app).
Who can see the documents I upload?
Only you, the Tonex academy office and the facilitator, assessor and moderator allocated to your cohort. Every time someone opens your file, it is recorded.
Tell us what you need. We’ll build the programme around it.
